Frequently Asked Questions

I understand that seeking help for mental health concerns can raise many questions. I want to provide clarity and assurance as you take this important step toward improving your well-being. Below are some of the most commonly asked questions that I receive from clients:

What should I expect from my first session?

The initial assessment aims to provide a safe and welcoming space where you can share your concerns, history, and goals for therapy. This session is not only about assessment but also about fostering a therapeutic relationship between you and Beth, ensuring that you feel comfortable moving forward.
By the end of the session I will share my thoughts on how I can best support you. Often that would be for me to offer ongoing sessions, but there can be times after conducting an assessment, where I think another therapist or modality of treatment might be better suited. If this is the case, I will always provide you with information on this, so you know how to source ongoing support.

How do I pay for sessions?

If you are self-funding, payment by bank transfer is required at least 24 hours prior to your booked session. I am also registered with certain health insurance companies. The invoicing processes vary between companies, so I will offer assistance with how to make claims, however, it is always recommended that you seek advice from your insurance provider as to what is required.

Before sessions can start, I will need approval in writing from the private health care organisation or the authorisation code.

Who is CBT for?

CBT is beneficial for anyone struggling with anxiety, depression, stress, or other mental health concerns. Whether you're looking for a CBT therapist in Reading, Berkshire, or prefer online therapy, it can be tailored to you

Who can you work with?

My training allows me to work with adults experiencing symptoms of depression and anxiety disorders(see About me page). Unfortunately I am not able to work with anyone under the age of 17 years, as this requires a specific qualification and different set of skills to my own.

What are your qualifications?

I have obtained the following qualifications, that allow me to provide effective care using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy principles:

  • BSc Degree in Psychology, Swansea University
  • Postgraduate Certificate in Evidence-Based Psychological Treatments (IAPT Pathway), Reading University
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Evidence-Based Psychological Treatments (IAPT Pathway), Reading University
  • Internet Cognitive Therapy for Social Anxiety Disorder (iCT-SAD), Oxford Centre for Anxiety Disorders and Trauma
  • Long Term Conditions and Medically Unexplained Symptoms in IAPT, University of Exeter
  • IAPT High Intensity Cognitive Behavioural Therapy Supervision Training
  • IAPT High Intensity Top-Up Training in Cognitive Therapy for Post-traumatic Stress Disorder

I am also accredited with with the British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies(BABCP). BABCP is the governing body that ensures their members uphold high standards of clinical practice, clinical supervision and training in CBT.

What if I cannot attend an appointment?

My attendance policy is designed to ensure that all clients receive the best possible care and support. I kindly request that you provide at least 24 hours' notice if you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment. This allows me to accommodate other clients who may be waiting for services. Please note that if a cancellation occurs within 24 hours of the scheduled appointment, you will be required to pay 100% of the appointment fee. If you fail to attend your appointment without giving notice, you will be required to pay 100% of the appointment fee.

Does everything I say remain confidential?

Confidentiality will be maintained within the codes of ethics and legal requirements. Confidentiality does not apply where it would mean that I, as your therapist, might break the law or where withholding information means I would breach the codes of ethics. Confidentiality may be breached if I consider there is a risk you may harm yourself or others. In such exceptional circumstances, where there is concern for your well being or that of others, it may be necessary to seek help outside the therapeutic relationship. In such an event where I am considering breaching confidentiality, you will normally be consulted first.

How do video appointments work?

Video sessions are completed using Skype. Five minutes before your scheduled appointment, you will click on the Skype video link provided in your confirmation email. It can be helpful to make sure you have a stable internet connection and that your camera and microphone are functioning properly. Once you join the call, you will be placed in a virtual waiting room until the time of your appointment.

Will my GP be notified?

Your GP details are taken before your sessions begin. I will get in touch with your GP with your consent, for example if we feel it would be beneficial to update them on your treatment. The only time I would make contact with your GP without your consent is if I feel there is a danger to yourself or others. In this instance I would always be transparent with you and let you know I will be doing this. This process is designed to prioritize the safety of all involved while maintaining the trust and confidentiality inherent in the therapeutic relationship.
